Lusitano Stallions

Dr. D.C. Cook and his wife Kathy, McKie Equine Communication Skills clients, recently purchased not one, but TWO beautiful Lusitano stallions.    They were recently imported from Brazil, and have the potential of becoming fantastic dressage horses.  The bay six-year-old Xisto is 16.2, and the grey five-year-old Zola is 15.1.  Check back for pictures as they begin their competitive career in the United States.  Congratulations, Kathy and D.C.!

First Two MECS DVD's

Well, they're ready!!!  Capt. Barry McKie's first training DVD is entitled "Lead Follow the Movement of Your Horse".  It stars the Captain as well as local equestrians Susan Croft, Jeanie Bell, Bea Carlson, Ronnie White, Michael Martin, Ashley Denski, Gabrielle Bodden, as well as Philipa McKie.   It includes several exercises that really make the points clear.  We know it will help your riding and your understanding of the principles of correct riding.  So what's with the title of the DVD?  Did we make a mistake and cross out "Follow"?  Instructors and almost every equine book always emphasize following the movement of the horse, which is misunderstood by beginning and intermediate riders alike due to the fact that they wait for their horse to move.  This misconception leads to lots of problems later in their training and to bewildered horses.  So Capt. Barry explains why in the DVD that it really should be Lead the movement of your horse.  The second DVD is "Lead Follow the Movement of Your Horse Part 2 Turning and on Circles".  They are available in local tack stores Altoona Station (Altoona, FL) and Dan's Discount Feed (Umatilla, FL) as well as by clicking right here.

Angleton, Texas, Clinic

Moms (and a few Dads) and daughters participated in a MECS Clinic in Angleton, Texas in February.  Hosts Kathy and Craig McDonald did a wonderful job of providing a beautiful arena and ranch site for the clinic, as well as a pizza party Saturday night.  Friday afternoon included a session on Leading the Movement of the Horse with participants riding with a vaulting pad on a lunge line to see how to move through their body movements instead of grip and hands.  Saturday progressed with four sessions of an hour and a half each.  Saturday night Capt. Barry critiqued hundreds of pictures of the riders to show "the good, the bad, and the ugly."  Sunday, the participants showed what they had learned, and culminated in a musical performance that all enjoyed.  A large number of auditors acted as the audience, encouraging the group to excel.

  Julie Goodnight

MECS Project Manager Laura Causey spent two days filming with Julie Goodnight of Colorado for her weekly RFD-TV show.  The MECS team worked with Julie's team to find a Florida location for winter filming.  Then Laura's Arabian mare Blissful Bey was selected for one of Julie's half-our shows, as well as starring in about six "Quick Tips" segments.  Look for the mare with the cute ears!

What's Wrong with this Picture?

We wanted to use this picture on the second DVD, but Capt. Barry wouldn't let us because two things are wrong in the picture.  Can you tell us at least one?  Write us at lgcmecs@equinecommunications.com if you think you know.  Correct answers in the next newsletter!
